Man charged with felony arson after fire attempt in Ithaca apartment

A man was arrested early Saturday after allegedly trying to start a fire in the stairwell of a downtown Ithaca apartment building.

Police responded around 1:30 a.m. on October 18 to a criminal mischief complaint at a building on the 100 block of East Green Street. Officers say 46-year-old Roy R. Roberts of Ithaca attempted to ignite a fire in the stairwell and was stopped while trying to activate the building’s fire alarm.

After an investigation, Roberts was charged with second-degree arson — a class B felony. He was arraigned by Judge Wallace and remanded to the Tompkins County Jail.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Ithaca Police Department.
