A local sustainability nonprofit has taken a big step forward with the hiring of its first staff members.
ReUse Systems, Inc. in Geneva has named Naomi Smith as its first executive director and welcomed Amina Hassan as an AmeriCorps VISTA service member.
Smith brings a deep background in nonprofit operations and sustainability. She most recently worked at the Center for Transformative Action in Ithaca, holding several leadership roles. She also has hands-on experience in retail and holds multiple degrees in natural resource management, GIS, and communications.
As executive director, Smith will focus on establishing a permanent home for the organization, securing funding, and leading its waste-reduction programs.
Hassan, a 2025 graduate of the University of Rochester, will support the nonprofit’s fundraising and outreach efforts during her year of AmeriCorps service. She brings experience in student leadership, social media, and small business, having launched her own online floral shop.
Funding for the new positions comes from Ontario County and the Rochester Youth Year AmeriCorps VISTA program. Hobart and William Smith Colleges are also backing the effort by providing office space and housing assistance.
“We are thrilled to welcome Naomi and Amina — and deeply grateful for support from Ontario County, AmeriCorps, and HWS,” said Jan Regan, board president.
Founded in 2024, ReUse Systems is developing community programs to keep goods out of landfills. Plans include a used goods shop, repair clinics, and a deconstruction program to reduce building waste — which can make up nearly a quarter of local trash streams.
The group’s mission took on new urgency with the planned closure of the Ontario County Landfill in 2028. The county has asked ReUse Systems to create a model that other communities can follow.
