Geneva candidates’ forum canceled after some decline to participate

A planned public forum featuring candidates for Geneva’s Ontario County Board of Supervisors seats has been canceled after several candidates declined to participate.

The League of Women Voters of Geneva announced the decision this week, citing national policy that prohibits holding candidate events unless all individuals running for a position agree to attend.

The forum had been scheduled for October 22 at the Geneva Public Library and was meant to give voters a chance to hear directly from candidates in the upcoming local elections.

According to the League, the Republican and Bipartisan-endorsed candidates — Sean Legg (Wards 1 & 2), James Babb (Wards 3 & 4), and Joseph Adulte (Wards 5 & 6) — did not respond individually to the League’s invitation. A party spokesperson indicated they declined to participate.

The Democratic and Common Ground-endorsed candidates — James Kennedy, Jan Regan, and Esther Dickinson — had accepted the invitation.

The League expressed disappointment but reiterated its commitment to fair and open civic engagement. “We do not advocate for nor oppose any political party or candidate,” the organization stated. “Our mission is to provide voter services and encourage an informed electorate.”
