A Cohocton man got a $2,000 bill for electricity at a vacant home with no working meter, according to WETM. David Sicks said the smart meter was removed in March after his brother’s death, but NYSEG still charged for months of nonexistent power use.
After Sicks gained access to the account and submitted a death certificate, NYSEG admitted the billing error and said charges would be removed.
The utility says it’s working to resolve the issue and will refund any payments made.
