Erie Canal replica boat draws crowds in Newark

The Seneca Chief, a hand-built replica of the 1825 Erie Canal boat, docked in Newark this week as part of a statewide tour, drawing large crowds, according to the Finger Lakes Times.

Built over six years by 220 volunteers at the Buffalo Maritime Center, the vessel celebrates the canal’s 200th anniversary. It also acknowledges the toll on Indigenous communities, planting white pines at each stop in tribute to the displaced Haudenosaunee.

The floating museum features historical exhibits and will travel from Buffalo to NYC by Oct. 26, with Newark being one of 28 symbolic stops.
