A new round of state-backed funding could spark major changes in how New York handles millions of used tires.
The REMADE Institute® just opened a Request for Proposals (RFP) to find and fund innovative ways to reuse, remanufacture, or recycle end-of-life tires in the state.
The RFP is part of the ongoing New York State Waste Tire Program. Earlier this year, the state tapped REMADE® — a national leader in sustainable manufacturing — to lead the effort.
The RFP is open to technology development projects that need research and testing, and demonstration projects that are ready to run real-world trials. Projects don’t have to be based in New York, but they must partner with an in-state source of scrap tires.
What kinds of tech are they looking for?
Ideas can range from new uses for shredded tires to advanced retreading tools that cut costs. Proposals could also include:
- Markets for tire-derived fuel, crumb rubber, or rubber-modified asphalt
- AI and machine learning systems that improve recycling performance
- Tools to measure how much life is left in used tires
Anyone in industry, nonprofits, or academia can apply. The deadline to submit is Nov. 17.
