An Auburn man is facing multiple charges after police say he shot a street sign — and accidentally struck himself in the arm — while driving under the influence in Fleming.
According to New York State Police, 55-year-old Bryon Wiler was arrested after the bizarre incident on Riester Road around 3 p.m. on September 23.
Troopers say Wiler illegally possessed a 9mm handgun and used it to shoot at a road sign. In the process, he accidentally hit his own arm. His injury was not life-threatening.
Wiler was also found to be intoxicated while operating a vehicle, investigators said.
He was charged with:
- Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd Degree (Class C felony)
- Driving While Intoxicated
- Criminal Mischief in the 4th Degree (Class A misdemeanor)
Wiler was processed at the State Police barracks in Auburn and taken to the Cayuga County Jail for arraignment. The investigation is ongoing.
