New pickleball courts coming to Outhouse Park in Canandaigua

Canandaigua is getting in on the pickleball boom — with two brand-new courts coming soon to Outhouse Park.

Construction is already underway, and town officials expect the courts to open by mid-October. The project is being handled by the Town Highway Department with help from the Parks & Recreation team.

“Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and we’re proud to bring two new courts to Outhouse Park,” said Town Supervisor Jared Simpson. He credited the Highway crew for their hard work, noting they’ve been juggling the court project alongside a full slate of summer road improvements.

Highway Superintendent Jim Fletcher said the site is being built to last, with strong attention to grading and foundation work. “We’re committed to creating quality facilities that residents will be able to enjoy safely for many years,” he said.

Invented in 1965, pickleball combines tennis, ping-pong, and badminton. It’s easy to learn, low-impact, and social — making it a popular option for families, seniors, and casual players alike. The sport now has over 13 million players nationwide.

Greg Reynolds, Director of Parks & Recreation, said the courts fit into the town’s bigger vision for active spaces. “Outhouse Park has long been a destination for sport, fitness, and recreation. Now pickleball adds another way for families and friends to come together at this amazing location.”
