The Village of Newark has officially launched a major planning effort to reshape and revitalize its Erie Canal waterfront — and local officials are asking residents to help guide the process.
The Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) aims to identify new recreational, economic, and environmental opportunities for Newark’s canal-facing areas. The plan will also define a long-term vision for the village’s waterfront development.
Public workshop set for October 20
The village will hold its first public workshop on October 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Newark High School (Room 116), where community members can share feedback, concerns, and ideas. Everyone who lives, works, does business, or enjoys recreation in Newark is encouraged to attend.
“We look forward to engaging the community in the process and furthering our collective vision for our community’s future development and growth,” village leaders said.
About the LWRP process
The plan is supported by funding from the New York Department of State, under the Environmental Protection Fund. A Waterfront Advisory Committee (WAC) — made up of residents, business owners, tourism reps, and village officials — is leading the planning.
The committee is currently cataloging Newark’s waterfront assets and identifying challenges that need to be addressed. Once the LWRP is finalized and adopted, the village will become eligible for a variety of state funding sources to implement projects — including grants for flood mitigation, water access, water quality improvements, and recreational facilities.
The process began in January 2025 and is expected to take about five years.
