SMI host agreement deal stalls over closure law

Seneca Meadows won’t sign a $150 million landfill deal unless Seneca Falls scraps a 2016 law that forces the landfill to shut down by year’s end, according to the Finger Lakes Times.

The Town Board approved the new 15-year agreement in March, but the landfill’s parent company, Waste Connections, is holding out. Officials say the company wants Local Law 3 repealed first — a law courts have repeatedly upheld.

Some town leaders now suggest reopening talks if SMI offers more money. Environmental groups say the latest court decision should end the legal fight and shut down the landfill for good.
