New York’s Health Department may have spent $1.2 billion on Medicaid payments for people no longer living in the state, according to a state audit released Tuesday by Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.
The audit found the agency made years of managed care payments for possibly ineligible recipients — many in New Jersey, Florida, and Pennsylvania. Some flaws stemmed from pandemic-era rules, but others traced back to weak oversight dating to 2017.
Health officials say fixes are in place, but the audit adds pressure as federal Medicaid cuts loom.
