A former fire chief in Marbletown will spend weekends in jail after stealing more than $100,000 from the department he once led.
William Storrs, who served as both chief and treasurer of the Marbletown Volunteer Fire Department, was sentenced to four months of weekends in the Wayne County Jail and five years of probation. He must also repay $101,394.50 in restitution.
Investigators say Storrs used the department’s debit cards and bank accounts to cover personal expenses over a four-year period. The theft lasted from January 2020 through July 2024 and included transfers to personal and credit card accounts belonging to him and his wife.
The scheme unraveled when a department member couldn’t use the department’s debit card because of insufficient funds. That triggered an internal review and a criminal investigation by the State Comptroller’s Office and the New York State Police.
Storrs was removed from his leadership role in July 2024 and later charged. He was sentenced by Judge Richard M. Healy in Wayne County Court.
State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said Storrs “abused the trust of the community he was sworn to serve and protect.” Wayne County District Attorney Christine Callanan added that public funds “exist to serve the community, not to line the pockets of those in power.”
