Federal agents executed a search warrant Thursday morning at Nutrition Bar Confectioners in Cato as part of an ongoing criminal investigation, according to Sheriff Brian Schenck.
The operation was led by U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) after a federal judge authorized a search of the State Route 34 facility for evidence connected to felony-level crimes. Schenck confirmed his office supported the detail with nine deputies, who handled perimeter security, traffic control, and family assistance around 9 a.m.
The sheriff’s office coordinated with the county Department of Social Services to ensure children from two families were quickly placed with approved caretakers. Schenck said his office’s participation was limited to public safety and did not involve immigration enforcement.
“This investigation is ongoing by HSI and does not directly involve our agency,” Schenck said. “Details on the case itself must come from federal authorities.” He emphasized that the sheriff’s role reflected long-standing cooperation with state and federal partners.
Costs covered by federal funds
Schenck addressed concerns about taxpayer expense, noting that overtime and other costs were reimbursed by federal agencies. The department’s mobile command center, visible at the scene, was purchased in 2011 with federal funding from U.S. Border Patrol.
Cayuga County Legislature Chair Jonathan Anna also issued a statement Friday, underscoring the county’s reliance on immigrant labor and voicing concern about the scope of federal actions. “Our immigrant workforce is essential to our agricultural economy,” Anna said. “I fully support legal immigration and those who seek their H-1B or H-2A status. However, I cannot condone the wide-reaching scope that is affecting migrant workers with no criminal record.”
He noted that Sheriff Schenck’s participation was limited to security and traffic duties, which do not require legislative approval.
The investigation remains ongoing, with further updates expected from federal authorities.
