Mets can’t finish off sweep of Tigers as Ryan Helsley implodes again (highlights)

The New York Mets fell 6-2 to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday afternoon at Comerica Park, failing to complete the three-game sweep.

Clay Holmes kept the Mets in the game early, striking out six over 4.2 innings, but his afternoon unraveled in the fifth. After an unearned run scored due to a catcher’s interference, Holmes walked two and saw his pitch count rise to 85. Gregory Soto relieved him but allowed a two-run single to Riley Greene, giving Detroit a 3-1 lead.

Ryan Helsley’s struggles continued in the seventh, as he allowed a leadoff single and walk before giving up a three-run homer to Kerry Carpenter, putting the game out of reach. Helsley has now surrendered 14 earned runs in 11 innings since joining the Mets.

Pete Alonso was a bright spot offensively, recording three hits, including a two-out RBI double in the third that gave the Mets their first run. New York threatened again in the sixth with Juan Soto and Alonso on base, and Mark Vientos drove in a run to narrow the deficit. However, a bases-loaded double play off Starling Marte ended the inning and halted momentum.
