Two people were airlifted to the hospital Monday morning after a crash involving a garbage truck and pickup in Romulus.
Deputies say it happened around 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of State Routes 96 and 414. A Casella garbage truck, heading north on Route 96, collided with a Chevrolet Silverado that was turning left from Route 414. The driver of the pickup, Anibal Berganza, 59, of Roslyn Heights, failed to yield, according to the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.
The impact hit the driver’s side of the pickup, trapping Berganza inside. Firefighters had to cut him free. He and a passenger — F Pace-Berganza, 53, also of Roslyn Heights — were flown to Upstate Medical Hospital with serious injuries. The truck driver, Fernando Cruz, 35, of Geneva, was not hurt but was checked by EMS at the scene.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged and had to be towed. Route 96 was closed for several hours as the sheriff’s accident reconstruction team investigated.
Fire crews from Romulus, Ovid, Lodi, Interlaken, and Fayette responded, along with the State Police commercial vehicle unit. The crash remains under investigation.
