Geneva and Newark police are cracking down on unsafe e-bike and e-scooter use as the devices grow in popularity, the Finger Lakes Times reports. Geneva Police Chief Ron Eveland told City Council riders must follow bicycle laws — no sidewalks, obey stop signs and lights — but many don’t, creating “an accident waiting to happen.”
Officers say violations include riding on high-speed roads, ignoring traffic rules, and not wearing helmets. Newark police have trained officers to patrol on e-bikes and are towing illegal electric motorcycles that lack pedals and exceed e-bike speed limits.
Both departments hope education and stricter enforcement will prevent serious crashes, with some councilors calling for new regulations before a tragedy occurs.
