State Police are investigating a fatal crash on the New York State Thruway in the town of Brutus that left one man dead and two people injured.
Troopers said the crash happened around 4:57 p.m. on Aug. 7 when a westbound tractor trailer driven by Mark S. Shidler, 50, of Applecreek, Ohio, crossed the median and guiderail into the eastbound lanes. The truck struck a 2022 Honda driven by 24-year-old John S. Roosa of Syracuse, with passenger Ashley G. Fay, 22, also of Syracuse.
The impact caused the Honda to roll several times before coming to rest, trapping both occupants inside. Roosa was airlifted to Upstate Hospital in critical but stable condition. Fay was taken by ambulance, treated for her injuries, and later released.
Shidler died at the scene.
Eastbound traffic backed up more than five miles for about three hours while crews responded and cleared the wreck. The investigation is ongoing.
