Canandaigua can’t ban pit bulls, committee told

Despite three pit bull attacks in the past year, Canandaigua’s Ordinance Committee learned state law prohibits breed-specific bans, according to the Finger Lakes Times. New York’s “dangerous dog” law focuses on behavior, provides due process, and is enforced locally by the city and Ontario County Humane Society.

National veterinary, legal, and animal welfare groups also recommend behavior-based policies over breed bans, citing constitutional concerns, ineffectiveness, and lack of scientific support. Committee members were advised to continue following existing state guidelines.

The meeting also covered backflow prevention device compliance, with staff urging deadlines for required maintenance records, and discussed stormwater facility upkeep and budget issues with the city’s county board representatives.
