Hazardous waste drop-off set for September in Yates County

Yates County is giving residents a free way to safely get rid of dangerous household chemicals and electronics next month.

Household Hazardous Waste Day will be held Saturday, September 13, at the Yates County Fairgrounds. The county says the event is designed to keep harmful materials out of landfills and waterways, protecting both public health and the environment. Residents must register in advance to participate, and once signed up, they’ll get a confirmed drop-off time and instructions.

Accepted hazardous waste items include antifreeze, pesticides, pool chemicals, oil-based paints, old gasoline, fluorescent light bulbs, and more. The event will also take electronics like laptops, televisions, printers, and mobile phones. Items such as propane tanks, motor oil, large appliances, medications, and yard waste won’t be accepted.

Registration is now open through the Yates County Planning Department. Forms are available at the office, located at 417 Liberty Street, Suite 1112, Penn Yan, or online through the county’s website.
