Federal plans to regulate lithium-ion batteries have been derailed after President Trump removed key members of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, according to Spectrum News.
The ousted commissioners had advanced safety rules following a surge in fires linked to batteries used in e-bikes and scooters. After their removal, the weakened commission reversed course, leaving Congress as the primary path for regulation. Advocates warn that no new federal safety rules—especially for children’s products—are being finalized.
New York officials back legislation now moving through Congress, but some say earlier CPSC proposals would have offered stronger protections. The batteries caused 154 fires and one death in NYC so far this year.
