Four mosquito samples in Oswego County tested positive for the deadly Eastern equine encephalitis virus, prompting emergency spraying plans, according to CNY Central.
Health officials confirmed EEEV in Central Square and West Monroe, along with the season’s first West Nile Virus case. EEEV is a rare, often fatal illness spread through mosquito bites. In response, the county will spray pesticides across 10,000 acres on August 7 after 6 p.m., weather permitting.
Residents in affected areas should stay indoors, shut windows, and cover outdoor items. Updates will be shared via the county’s Hyper-Reach system.
