An Auburn preschool reported hundreds of thousands in improper expenses to the state, according to The Citizen.
A state audit found the E. John Gavras Center claimed more than $625,000 in ineligible costs between 2018 and 2021, including donated rent, unsupported staff compensation, and misused special education funds. Auditors also flagged excessive staffing and fringe benefits for the former executive director.
The center is now under new leadership and has launched a corrective plan to improve oversight. Officials say they’re contesting a portion of the findings tied to pandemic-related staffing decisions.
