Kia recall: Over 300K Telluride and K5 face safety hazard

Kia has issued two major recalls affecting over 300,000 vehicles due to trim pieces that may detach while driving — posing crash risks to other motorists, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The automaker announced separate recalls this week for its 2023 to 2025 model year Telluride and K5 vehicles. Both involve exterior parts that can loosen and fall off, potentially becoming road hazards.

What vehicles are affected?

  • 2023–2025 Kia Telluride:
    • Units recalled: 201,149
    • Issue: Door belt molding trim may detach from the vehicle.
    • Location: The strip runs along the top edge of the door where the window meets the metal frame.
  • 2023–2025 Kia K5:
    • Units recalled: 100,063
    • Issue: C-pillar garnish face plates may loosen and fall off.
    • Cause: Supplier quality issue.

In both cases, the affected trim pieces could fall off while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of crashes or injuries to surrounding drivers.

Free repairs available at dealerships

The NHTSA said Kia dealerships will provide free inspections and replacements of the loose parts. Vehicle owners will begin receiving notification letters starting September 26.

Owners do not need to wait for the letter to take action. If concerned, they can contact Kia or visit a dealership to arrange an early inspection.

Why this matters

Loose exterior parts might seem minor, but at highway speeds, they can:

  • Become projectile hazards for surrounding drivers.
  • Increase risk of multi-vehicle accidents.
  • Lead to liability claims and out-of-pocket costs if injuries or damage occur.

The NHTSA advises all affected vehicle owners to respond quickly to the recall.

What to do if your Kia is recalled

  • Check your vehicle’s VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls
  • Schedule a service appointment at your local Kia dealership
  • Keep an eye out for the official recall letter in late September
  • Avoid highway driving if you suspect any loose trim parts
