A Sterling woman was arrested for possessing a controlled substance following a welfare fraud investigation earlier this month, the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.
Deputies arrested 47-year-old Brandy J. Disbennett on July 15 and charged her with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor. The arrest stemmed from a July 10 incident in which deputies assisted the Wayne County Probation Office at an address in Sterling.
According to investigators, Disbennett was taken into custody by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office on welfare fraud charges. During a search, officers discovered a substance suspected to be an illegal narcotic. Testing later confirmed it was fentanyl or methamphetamine.
Disbennett turned herself in five days later at the Cayuga County Public Safety Building. She was processed and released with an appearance ticket for the Town of Sterling Court on July 23 at 6:00 p.m.
