In a rare scene at Yankee Stadium, José Caballero changed teams mid-game Thursday as the Tampa Bay Rays traded the versatile infielder to the New York Yankees while the clubs faced each other.
Cameras captured Caballero hugging teammates in the Tampa Bay dugout and sharing the news, including a surprised Taylor Walls, before making the short walk to his new organization.
The Yankees sent outfielder Everson Pereira and a player to be named later or cash considerations to the Rays in exchange for the 28-year-old speedster. Caballero entered the game in the fifth inning before a long rain delay, and word of the trade surfaced in the seventh.
Known for his quickness and defensive flexibility, Caballero has stolen 34 bases in 42 attempts this season and provides New York with additional infield depth and shortstop insurance. He’s appeared in 31 games at shortstop, 27 at third base, and 17 at second, while also logging 35 games in the outfield.
Caballero’s arrival highlights a busy trade deadline for New York, which also overhauled its bullpen by acquiring relievers David Bednar, Jake Bird, and Camilo Doval.
