Geneva tenants displaced after HWS buys apartments

Dozens of low-income residents are scrambling for housing after Hobart and William Smith Colleges bought Geneva Gardens, according to the Finger Lakes Times. The 53-unit complex will be converted into student and faculty housing, leaving longtime tenants with as little as 30 days to relocate.

Tenants say they were blindsided by the sale and fear homelessness due to Geneva’s tight and costly rental market. Some describe the loss not just as losing homes, but a close-knit community.

The Colleges say they’re offering support, including relocation grants and lease extensions, and plan to open the renovated units by fall 2026.
