A repeat offender caught after a major manhunt has been released, sparking criticism from Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter, according to News10NBC.
Christopher Cole, arrested for shoplifting in Brockport, has a lengthy history—16 misdemeanor convictions and two outstanding felony charges. His arrest involved a large-scale police operation with drones, K-9s, and helicopters, costing taxpayers an estimated $12,500. Baxter said releasing such offenders undermines public safety and drains law enforcement resources.
He urged passage of the PROTECT Act to let judges detain repeat offenders pre-trial, while also addressing concerns about racial profiling through transparent oversight systems.
