The New York Yankees couldn’t overcome Marcus Stroman’s early struggles or a rather quiet day from the offense in Saturday’s 9-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies at Yankee Stadium, dropping their fourth game in the last five and losing their second straight series.
With Aaron Judge sidelined due to elbow soreness, New York’s lineup lacked its usual punch. Despite collecting nine hits and drawing five walks, the Yankees went just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 men on base.
Stroman ran into trouble quickly and never recovered. He gave up a solo home run to Bryce Harper in the third and unraveled in the fourth, walking four batters and allowing three runs before being pulled with two outs in the inning. He finished with five hits, four walks, and four earned runs across 3.2 innings, pushing his ERA to 6.09.
Jasson Domínguez drove in New York’s first run with a two-out RBI single in the fourth. Giancarlo Stanton provided a brief spark with a two-run homer in the seventh, his seventh of the season, and added a single in the ninth to finish 2-for-5.
Allan Winans, pitching for the first time in nearly three weeks, gave up four runs in a rough seventh, highlighted by a two-run home run from Edmundo Sosa and a two-run double by Kyle Schwarber.
The Yankees (56-48) will try to salvage the series finale on Sunday with Carlos Rodón on the mound against Phillies ace Zack Wheeler. The first pitch is at 1:35 p.m.
