A Nunda EMT who has answered more than 5,000 emergency calls over four decades was recognized with one of the state’s highest honors for civic service.
Senator Pam Helming presented Martha Blair with a New York State Senate Commendation Award during the Nunda First Responders and Veterans Luncheon on July 13. Blair, a longtime member of the Nunda Volunteer Ambulance Service and a Town Board Member, was honored for her lifelong commitment to emergency care, public health, and community leadership.
“For more than four decades, Martha Blair has been a pillar of the Nunda Volunteer Ambulance Service,” Helming said. “Martha’s life is a powerful example of what it means to serve with heart, humility, and purpose.”
In addition to her work as an EMT, Blair dedicated more than 30 years to teaching and coaching at her alma mater, where she trained upperclassmen in CPR and first aid. She has also volunteered through the Red Cross, led local wellness initiatives, supported the area food bank, and used her backyard pool to teach swimming lessons to children and residents.
Helming said the Senate Commendation Award is reserved for individuals whose charitable and civic service has made a lasting impact. “She’s given up countless evenings with family and friends to support this community and for that, she has earned our deepest and most enduring gratitude,” Helming said.
