Tenney introduces bill to add Ontario County to NBRC

Congresswoman Claudia Tenney moved to expand a key economic development program on Thursday by introducing legislation to add Ontario County to the Northern Border Regional Commission.

The NBRC, a federal-state partnership created by Congress, funds infrastructure and economic revitalization in rural communities across northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Ontario County is currently excluded from the commission’s eligibility map.

“Ontario County is a vital part of our region’s economy,” Tenney said. “Expanding the NBRC eligibility to include Ontario County will unlock new opportunities for investment, infrastructure, and innovation.”

The proposed legislation would enable Ontario County to compete for NBRC funding alongside neighboring counties already included in the program. Local officials say the designation could help the county attract federal dollars for infrastructure, workforce housing, and small business development.

“Including Ontario County in the Northern Border Regional Commission will be a great benefit to our residents, farms, and businesses,” said Jared Simpson, Chair of the Ontario County Board of Supervisors.

Peter Ingalsbe, Farmington Town Supervisor, said the bill would “promote more economic development in the County” and noted the need for projects that “encourage a highly productive workforce, new housing, and improved water & sewer infrastructure.”

Tracey Dello Stritto, President and CEO of the Ontario County Chamber of Commerce, praised the legislation’s potential to drive long-term growth. “This designation would open the door to transformative federal investments that support infrastructure upgrades and business innovation,” she said. “Ontario County is a fast-growing, economically diverse region, and inclusion in the NBRC will enhance our ability to compete for resources.”
