Man sentenced to probation in dog attack that injured child

A Canandaigua man will avoid jail after a pit bull he was watching severely injured a father and his 10-year-old son, according to WHAM.

Casey Murphy, 27, was sentenced to three years of probation, community service, and ordered to pay restitution after pleading guilty to third-degree assault. The August 2024 attack left both victims with serious injuries, including deep lacerations and disfigurement. A bystander was also hurt trying to help.

Prosecutors said the same dog had attacked a toddler weeks earlier. The dog’s owner, Madison Herendeen, faces trial this fall. A no-contact order has been issued to protect the victims.
