State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash in the town of Fleming that left five people injured, including a critically hurt teenager and a child who was ejected from a vehicle.
The collision occurred around 12:37 p.m. on July 12 at the intersection of Bluefield Road and Skillet Road. According to a preliminary investigation, a 2023 Chevrolet Traverse traveling west on Skillet Road failed to stop at a posted stop sign and collided with an eastbound 2013 Ford F-150.
Garrard J. Plants, 18, of Mexico, New York, was driving the pickup truck and sustained life-threatening injuries. He remains in critical but stable condition. A 17-year-old passenger in the truck suffered a head injury.
A 5-year-old child riding in the Chevrolet Traverse was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. The child is reported to be in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Traverse, 37-year-old Roberto G. Vasquez Velasquez of West Winfield, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Another passenger, 32-year-old Yuli G. Juarez Vasquez, also of West Winfield, was transported for evaluation.
Two of the injured were airlifted to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse due to the severity of their conditions. The remaining victims were taken by ambulance.
State Police said no evidence of drug or alcohol use was found. The Collision Reconstruction Unit and Forensic Identification Unit processed the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.
Fire departments from Fleming, Owasco, and Aurelius responded, along with MercyFlight and Auburn City Ambulance.
