The Between the Lakes Community Service Players will bring the hit Broadway musical Something Rotten! to the South Seneca High School stage for a three-night run, with proceeds benefiting the Ovid Fire Department. Performances are scheduled for July 24, 25, and 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the school’s auditorium on Main Street in Ovid.
Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors, available at the door or in advance at www.zeffy.com/ticketing/something-rotten.
A madcap mash-up of Elizabethan theater and modern musical comedy, Something Rotten! follows the misadventures of a struggling playwright who turns to a soothsayer for help competing with none other than William Shakespeare. What follows is an over-the-top tale involving prophecy, poetry, and the birth of the musical. Directed by Theater Association of New York State (TANYS) award winner Tina Coville-Bauder, the show features a talented cast and crew with multiple TANYS honors among them.
Leading the ensemble are Alec Targett as Shakespeare, Dan Papperman as Nick Bottom, Chamberlain Bauder as Nigel Bottom, and Jared Pratt as Nostradamus. They’re joined by Ave Bauder, Chad Eastman, Andrea Puls, Julia Rogers, Mark Sinkiewicz, Emily Suggs, and nearly 20 additional performers rounding out the high-energy cast.
True to the Community Service Players’ mission, each year’s production is paired with a local nonprofit to raise funds and awareness. This summer’s beneficiary is the Ovid Fire Department, which led emergency response efforts to the devastating January 21 blaze that destroyed several Main Street businesses and displaced residents. Funds raised from the production will support the department’s equipment replacement needs.
“Joining with the Ovid Fire Department as our community partner was an easy choice for us,” said Coville-Bauder. “The town has really come together to support each other, and we are hoping that between program patrons and large audiences we will be able to make a significant donation to the department.”
Coville-Bauder added that Something Rotten! has been a passion project since she saw it on Broadway with her drama students. “You don’t have to be a Shakespeare lover or a musical theater junkie to enjoy this show,” she said. “But if you are, you’re really going to love it. It’s a bit like Monty Python meets Shakespeare.”
