Jamesville Beach in Onondaga County has been temporarily closed for swimming after health officials detected the visual presence of an algal bloom in the water.
The Onondaga County Health Department announced the closure Thursday, citing potential health risks. Water sampling will be conducted to ensure no harmful toxins are present before the beach is reopened.
Algal blooms can make water appear green and create thick surface scums. Some types of algae can release toxins that may cause skin irritation, eye irritation, vomiting, or diarrhea if ingested. The Health Department warned people and pets to stay away from any body of water showing signs of a bloom.
Officials advised the public to avoid swimming, boating, or fishing near blooms, and to rinse off with clean water if exposed. Children and animals should also be kept away from contaminated water.
While Jamesville Beach remains closed, Oneida Shores Beach in Brewerton remains open to swimmers. It operates Monday through Thursday from noon to 6 p.m., and Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
