A judge has issued an injunction blocking New York’s corrections department from suspending parts of the HALT Act, a law limiting solitary confinement, according to Spectrum News. The temporary pause was part of a deal to end a recent 22-day strike by correction officers.
The injunction, filed on behalf of an inmate-rights group, takes effect July 11. The HALT Act, enacted in 2022, caps solitary confinement at 15 consecutive days and bans its use for vulnerable populations.
Critics argued the suspension violated human rights protections. The state corrections department says it is reviewing the court’s decision amid ongoing concerns over facility safety and staffing shortages.
