Republicans are calling on Gov. Kathy Hochul to block a bill that would end New York’s “100-foot rule” for gas service. According to the Finger Lakes Times, the rule requires utilities to cover gas hookup costs for buildings within 100 feet of a main. If repealed, those expenses—ranging from $2,500 to $10,000—would shift to property owners.
State Sen. Tom O’Mara and other GOP lawmakers argue the change would burden residents, hurt small businesses, and increase reliance on an already strained electric grid. They say the plan prioritizes energy mandates over affordability and stability.
The legislation passed in late June. Republicans say Hochul’s veto is vital to protect middle-class budgets and ensure energy policies remain practical and fair.
