HABs advisory issued for Conesus Lake swimmers

A Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) advisory is in effect for Conesus Lake, with small, localized blooms spotted near Vitale Park and the southeast shoreline, according to the Livingston County Department of Health. While the drinking water remains safe, residents are urged to avoid swimming or letting pets near affected areas.

Blue-green algae can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals, causing skin irritation, nausea, or breathing issues. These blooms often look like green or reddish “pea soup” on the water’s surface. Authorities recommend steering clear of suspect areas and rinsing off immediately after exposure.

To report blooms, contact the county health department or use the state’s online DEC HAB tracking system.
