Newfield school cell phone ban shows early success

As New York prepares to implement a statewide student cell phone ban, Newfield Central School District is ahead of the curve, having adopted its own ban in 2023, according to Tompkins Weekly. District leaders report improved focus, stronger social connections, and rising academic scores since the policy took effect.

Students initially resisted the change, citing FOMO and loss of autonomy, but educators say classroom engagement and peer interactions have since flourished. State test scores show a 34% jump in math and 18% in English among grades 3–8.

Separately, Newfield’s $21 million capital project continues. Garage updates will delay paving until 2026, but improvements include EV bus stations, drainage upgrades, and new sidewalks near Cancro Field.
