Geneva Middle School Assistant Principal Shannon Kelley has been appointed principal, effective July 1, the Geneva City School District announced this week.
Kelley has been a part of the middle school community for more than a decade, first joining as an English teacher in 2014 before transitioning to administration in 2022. Superintendent Bo Wright said the decision to promote Kelley was rooted in her proven leadership, deep ties to the school, and strong relationships with students, staff, and families.
“Shannon has been a part of the Geneva Middle School family for a long time,” Wright said. “We’ve been very impressed with her abilities as an instructional leader, as well as her skills in managing operations and forming relationships. She’s been an integral part of the building’s improvement, and we feel very confident in her continued leadership.”
Kelley called the promotion an honor. “GMS is more than a school; it’s a family, and I am proud to be part of it,” she said. “It’s an honor to lead alongside the educators and staff who first welcomed me as a new teacher, mentored me, and continue to inspire me.”
She succeeds Matt Heath, who will become principal of Geneva High School. “Matt has done an incredible job at GMS, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he’s able to do at the high school,” Wright added.
In addition to her experience in education, Kelley brings a background in military leadership. She has served as a company first sergeant, civil affairs team leader, and instructor with the U.S. Army Reserve. Kelley holds a bachelor’s degree in English from SUNY Geneseo, a master’s in education from SUNY Buffalo, and a Certificate of Advanced Studies from the University of Rochester.
