A massive sinkhole on Sackett Road in Avon, New York, has prompted a state of emergency following intense storms earlier this week, according to WHAM. Local officials say the road collapse mirrors similar damage from a decade ago but is more severe this time.
Avon Town Supervisor David LeFeber said outside funding will be needed to repair the site, which may take months to complete. The sinkhole, formed by powerful flash flooding, left nearby residents stunned as water carved through the area.
State Sen. Pam Helming visited Avon and pushed for state emergency aid, stressing that surrounding towns and farms have also been hit hard. A detour is in place while officials assess costs and reconstruction plans.
