Trump stimulus checks in 2025: Is the IRS sending payments?

Trump's Big, Beautful Bill and impact on Social Security retirees

As of June 2025, the IRS and all federal agencies have not issued an official $5,000 stimulus check related to President Donald Trump’s proposed “DOGE dividend.” Despite online speculation, Congress has not passed any legislation, and no agency has authorized any payments.

What Trump has said

In February 2025, President Trump floated the idea of a $5,000 stimulus payment during a summit in Miami. He referred to the potential payment as a “DOGE dividend,” which he claimed would be funded by savings from a hypothetical Department of Government Efficiency.

However, Trump has not released any official plan, policy document, or funding mechanism since that statement. No federal department or agency has confirmed this proposal, and Congress has not introduced or approved any related bill.

IRS status on stimulus checks

The Internal Revenue Service has not announced any new stimulus checks in 2025. The last official federal stimulus check was the third Economic Impact Payment (up to $1,400) distributed in 2021. The IRS provided a deadline of April 15, 2025, to claim this payment through the 2021 tax return using the Recovery Rebate Credit.

That deadline has now passed. Even if you filed a tax extension, you still needed to submit your 2021 return by April 15, 2025, to qualify. You can no longer claim missed payments, and the IRS confirms it offers no extensions or appeals.

Watch out for scams

With misinformation circulating online, the IRS warns taxpayers to be cautious:

  • No one from the IRS will call or text you to confirm your eligibility or request personal details.
  • Do not share your Social Security number or bank account with anyone claiming to expedite a stimulus payment.
  • Visit IRS.gov directly for official updates.

How to track your existing tax refund

Although no new stimulus checks are active, you can still track your federal tax refund:

  • Use the Where’s My Refund? tool online
  • Call the IRS at 800-829-1954
  • Refunds are typically issued within 21 days for e-filed returns with direct deposit
