Tompkins County has begun installing a network of AI-powered cameras to track vehicles and detect gunshots, according to The Ithaca Voice. So far, 20 out of 50 cameras contracted from tech firm Flock are operational across the area.
The devices capture license plate numbers, vehicle details, and timestamps, storing the data for 30 days in a cloud system accessible to over 100 law enforcement agencies. While officials say the cameras help solve crimes, critics warn they could fuel unchecked surveillance.
Despite reassurances about privacy, concerns persist about how the data might be used. Residents and watchdog groups remain wary, especially as some jurisdictions have shared data with federal agencies, raising fears about potential misuse.
