A Rochester news anchor’s $5,000 tow bill has inspired proposed legislation to cap towing fees across New York, according to News10NBC. Senator Jeremy Cooney introduced the bill after learning Nikki Rudd was charged thousands for a 33-mile tow by Bald Hill Automotive.
The legislation would limit personal vehicle towing to $100 plus tolls statewide—excluding New York City—with heavier vehicles capped at $125 plus $4 per mile. It aims to replace the patchwork of local laws with consistent, fair pricing.
The bill passed the State Senate and now awaits action in the Assembly, which ends its session next week. Cooney called the lack of regulation a consumer protection failure and urged lawmakers to act swiftly.
