The New York Yankees’ bats fell silent once again as they dropped the series finale to the Red Sox, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park. The loss completed Boston’s three-game sweep and marked the first time New York has been swept in a series this season.
Max Fried gave the Yankees a strong start, allowing just two runs over seven innings with nine strikeouts. Both Red Sox runs came with two outs, a first-inning RBI bloop single from Trevor Story, and a fifth-inning solo home run by Rafael Devers. Fried kept the game close, but the Yankees’ offense couldn’t get anything going against Boston starter Brayan Bello.
Bello stifled the Yankees over seven shutout innings, scattering three hits and striking out eight. New York managed five total hits and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position, grounding into three double plays. Aaron Judge, who struck out three times and hit into an inning-ending double play in the eighth, finished the series just 1-for-12 with nine strikeouts.
Trent Grisham had two hits, including a leadoff double in the first, but was left stranded. Ben Rice’s third-inning baserunning miscue cut short a potential rally. Despite bringing the tying run to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings, the Yankees couldn’t cash in.
The loss drops New York to 42-28 heading into a four-game home series against the Los Angeles Angels. Clarke Schmidt is scheduled to take the mound Monday at 7:05 p.m. as the Yankees aim to bounce back in the Bronx.
