The Finger Lakes Railway Corp. will receive more than $3.8 million in federal funding to rehabilitate rural rail infrastructure in Watkins Glen, Congressman Nick Langworthy announced Tuesday.
The $3,869,945 grant comes from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) program and will support critical track modernization and safety efforts across the region.
“I am thrilled to announce that the Finger Lakes Railway Corp. has been awarded over $3.8 million for critical track rehabilitation in Watkins Glen,” said Congressman Langworthy. “This is a major victory for the Southern Tier’s transportation network and a testament to what strong leadership can deliver for rural communities.”
Though the project was previously announced during the Biden administration, it had not been funded until now. The release of funds comes under the current administration and Secretary Duffy, who has prioritized clearing a backlog of 3,200 previously awarded but unobligated transportation grants.
“DOT has reviewed these agreements to ensure compliance with the President’s Executive Orders and will be working with the project sponsors to get these agreements signed,” Secretary Duffy’s office stated.
The funding is expected to improve safety and stimulate local economic growth in the Southern Tier by enhancing rural freight rail operations.
