A rough outing from Ryan Yarbrough put the New York Yankees (39-24) in an early hole, and despite a late push, they couldn’t climb out in a 10-7 loss to the Boston Red Sox (31-35) on Saturday night in the Bronx.
Yarbrough, steady since moving to the rotation, was tagged for eight runs over four innings in his toughest outing of the season. Boston broke through with a five-run third, capitalizing on a miscue at third and timely hits, including a three-run double by Trevor Story and a two-run homer by Romy Gonzalez the following inning.
Austin Wells gave the offense life with a three-run shot in the second and added an RBI double in the fourth. DJ LeMahieu’s two-run single in the eighth cut the deficit to one, but Wells struck out with the tying run in scoring position. Aaron Judge went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
Yerry De Los Santos tossed three scoreless innings in relief of Yarbrough, and Mark Leiter Jr. worked a clean eighth, but Ian Hamilton allowed two crucial runs in the ninth that sealed it for Boston.
Aroldis Chapman closed the door for the Red Sox in the ninth.
The Yankees will look to bounce back and take the series on Sunday at 7:10 p.m., with Carlos Rodón set to take the mound against Boston’s Hunter Dobbins.
