Geneva officials are taking steps to address a long-abandoned Castle Street property that burned down three years ago, according to the Finger Lakes Times. Once home to Madia’s grocery store, the plaza remains in ruins, prompting neighborhood complaints and an online petition for its removal.
On Wednesday, City Council voted to schedule a July 2 public hearing that could declare the structure unsafe—paving the way for demolition. If approved, the city could tear it down and bill the property owners for the cost.
Past efforts to redevelop the site, including a failed grant application, haven’t moved the project forward. In 2023, fencing was added to keep people away from the dangerous site.
