Driver killed in wrong-way crash on I-86, police say

A 67-year-old man died in a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer after driving the wrong way on Interstate 86 in Chemung County, New York State Police said.

Troopers identified the deceased driver as John E. Miller of Lowman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash occurred around 12:15 p.m. on June 2 near Exit 58 in the town of Chemung. A trooper from SP Horseheads came upon the two-vehicle accident while on routine patrol. Investigators said Miller was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane in a 2002 Chevrolet sedan when he struck a 2024 Volvo tractor-trailer.

The driver of the truck, 44-year-old Imran Shahid of Canada, suffered minor injuries and was evaluated at the scene.

Responding agencies included the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Collision Reconstruction Unit, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, and environmental officials due to a diesel fuel spill. Local fire departments and the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.

The investigation is ongoing.
