Big Flats group demands cleanup of former Agway site

Residents in Big Flats are renewing calls for an environmental investigation at the former Agway facility, where a new apartment project is proposed, WENY reports. The group, Big Flats Defenders, claims contamination has been ignored for decades and is urging state intervention.

At a press conference, the group said new evidence has surfaced since their initial plea in April. They’ve now sent a second letter to Gov. Kathy Hochul, demanding cleanup before any redevelopment proceeds. DEC previously tested the site in 2020 and found no action was needed.

The town board says its hands are tied without DEC involvement, but activists insist officials have a duty to protect public health.
