No 2025 New Mexico Rebate for 2024 Tax Filers, State Says

Stack of unclaimed U.S. Treasury stimulus checks on a desk at a busy IRS office in Washington, D.C., with employees working in the background.

Amid confusion over recent reports suggesting a rebate program was underway in 2025, the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department (NMTRD) has confirmed that no such rebate exists.

In a statement to FingerLakes1.com on May 29, Bobbie Marquez, Acting Director of Communications for NMTRD, said, “There is not currently a rebate for taxpayers filing a 2024 return.”

State Officials Clarify the Misinformation

On May 29, Bobbie Marquez, Acting Director of Communications at the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department (NMTRD), issued a direct statement to FingerLakes1.com.

“There is not currently a rebate for taxpayers filing a 2024 return,” Marquez wrote in an email.

This statement contradicts several reports suggesting New Mexico had approved a $500 million rebate program. Those reports also claimed the state had already started issuing payments in April 2025. But the department confirms those claims are false.

What Was Originally Reported?

Some articles stated that New Mexico would issue $500 checks to single filers and $1,000 to joint filers or heads of household. They also said the payments would arrive automatically for anyone who filed a 2024 state tax return.

While this may have caused confusion, it is now clear there is no active rebate tied to 2024 filings.

What Residents Need to Know

There is no need to wait for a rebate check. The state is not offering financial relief through tax return-based payments at this time. Any official program would require legislative approval and a public announcement from the governor or NMTRD.

If a new rebate is created in the future, the department will provide clear guidance.

How to Stay Informed

Residents should monitor the official New Mexico Taxation and Revenue website for updates. It remains the best source for accurate and timely information.
